d66 Pharaon Department 66 Grenache
2014 Vintage
d66 Pharaon Department 66 Grenache is sourced from very old Syrah and Grenache vines in California's central valley, created by noted winemaker Dave Phinney, from Orin Swift wines. These gnarly grapevines product small and concentrated fruit, which results in a big fruit bomb of a red wine. Blackberry pie, purple plum, and tangy ripe raspberry almost leap out of the glass.
Aging in new oak barrels helps to tame the sweet, and imparts a sweet, smoky oak aroma on the nose. This luscious wine is full-bodied, with medium tannin and a dark garnet color, yet is still approachable.
The high alcohol content of this wine makes it overpowering for lighter fare - stick with roasted game meats, grilled steaks, and even creamy, pungent cheeses. This meaty red is perfect to share in front of the fireplace on a winter's night.
